HOMICIDE detectives from the Imo State Police Command are trying to unravel the reason behind the hacking to death of a 70-year-old woman by her daughter-in-law.
Mrs. Agatha Obioha was killed by her expectant daughter-in-law, Mrs. Happiness Obioha (nee Esom) in Amaokwe Okwu Ufuruaku community, Awo Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.
Happiness, who hails from Amamkpu Neto in Achi, Orji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, reportedly committed the act while her mother-in-law was leaving the bathroom.
It was learnt that her action was “a product of unwarranted acrimony accumulated over time against the deceased”, who until her death operated a retail shop in front of the family compound.

A member of the grieving Obioha family, who gave a graphic detail of the incident, disclosed that the deceased widow, whose son is a South African-based University Professor, had on that fateful day, entered the bathroom to have a shower, oblivious of a premeditated plot against her life.
The killer daughter-in-law, who is married to Mr. Greg Obioha, a media consultant, had hid an axe behind the refrigerator in the dining room and waited patiently for her mother-in-law to return from the bathroom.
According to the source, as soon as the deceased emerged from the bathroom and was heading for the bedroom, the suspect stealthily attacked her from behind with the axe, inflicting several deep cuts on her neck.
The septuagenarian mother of three slumped and died on the spot without anybody having an inkling of the dastardly act as all members of the family had left the house for their various places of work.
The killer daughter-in-law was said to have locked up the remains of the deceased in the room until 2p.m. same day, when a cousin to her husband visited the family and out of curiosity, forced the door open and discovered the lifeless body and raised the alarm.
The lifeless body has since been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary in Orlu.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Vitalis Onugu, confirmed the incident.
He said: “The suspect has been arrested and detained while investigations continue”.
