Meeting Funmi really inspired me. She is young, beautiful with the right background but she choose to do something for the society unlike most of us who look for what the society will give to us.
Oluwafunmilayo Oyatogun is a 21-year old Nigerian woman with an extra-ordinary vision for sustainable development in Nigeria and Africa. She received two bachelors degrees in Environmental Studies and Geography from the University of Colorado - Boulder. Right before graduating from the university, she founded Bailiff Africa: an organization focused on education and innovation for Africa's sustainable development. She returned to Nigeria to focus on her passion for environment and sustainable development and contributes daily through Bailiff Africa.
Bailiff Africa is the first local organization of its kind in Nigeria and provides services through The Magazine and Education. The Bailiff Africa free online magazine is hosted on www.bailiffafrica.org and uploads several articles and news on sustainable development in form of clips, videos, photographs and written form weekly. While all of the organization's focus is on African contexts, the magazine attracts readers from across the world. Bailiff Africa also recognizes the environmental education gap that exists in schools’ curricula, higher education, government policies and professional organizations in Africa. In order to fill this gap, Bailiff Africa provides unique and context-specific workshops, seminars, trainings and presentations to people and organizations in Africa.
Another unique Bailiff Africa program is Bailiff Issues, a weekly environmental and sustainable development discussion series with experts and youth leaders across areas relevant to environment and sustainable development. Bailiff Africa has achieved an impressive feat in the year it has been in operation. The weekly 'Bailiff Issues' (#BailiffIssues) discussions online have climbed from a reach of a few hundred people in March, 2013 to over 260,000 in May, 2013.
Young people are invited to subscribe to our magazine at www.bailiffafrica.org and challenge their knowledge about the environment and sustainable development. Oluwafunmilayo also loves to write, read books, travel and sing. She can be reached by e-mail at funmi.oyatogun@gmail.com.
