Breaking News: Pep Guordiola quits as Barcelona boss!

Barcelona have confirmed that their coach, Pep Guardiola, has decided to leave the club at the end of the season. His assistant, Tito Vilanova, will succeed Guardiola next season.
At a press conference called at the Camp Nou on Friday lunchtime, Guardiola said that he had always wanted short contracts because the demands of the job were so huge. "Four years is an eternity for a coach," he said. At the beginning of October 2011 Guardiola says that he told the chairman that he felt his era at Barcelona was closing, though he could not say so publicly. Now that the club was no longer in the Spanish title race or the Champions League he felt it was time to end the uncertainty.
"That passion so necessary to continue, so the players listen to you disappears after four years," he said. "You can only recover that by resting. It would have been a bad idea to continue. Perhaps we wouldn't have gone wrong but I had the perception it would. I could not run the risk that it would go wrong. It is my time to go."

"I think that sincerely that the next person will have things to bring that can't. Every day during four years, the demands are very high, the pressure, the necessary energy to push the players and enjoy it. I need to rest and move away."
"I'm very sorry for all of the uncertainty I created over this time over my future, maybe that was an error of mine," Guardiola said. "I didn't mean to create this kind of mood."
He paid a sincere tribute to the players he was "privileged" to coach who made the "dream" possible. Now he needed time to recover. Time had taken its toll on him and he didn't feel the same as he did four years ago. "I am proud I have done my duty," he said, and left to the applause of his audience which included many members of his squad.

The club's president, Sandro Rossell, opened the meeting by confirming Guardiola's decision and saying to him: "Thank you for your work and your love."
After the two principals had spoken the club's sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, announced the appointment of Vilanova: "We chose Tito because he represents the idea and the image," he said. "He has commitment and personality."
Vilanova underwent an operation in November last year to remove a throat tumour and has only recently returned to work. At the beginning of the season he was poked in the eye by the Real Madrid manager, José Mourinho.

Zubizarreta added: "We've always said that if the team needs players, we look at home first (Barca B). Who do we have here at home? Tito."
Guardiola endorsed the move. He said: "I think the club has taken the best decision possible. He is more than capable. The players know him. He will make few changes. He will give the club and these players something that I thought I could no longer give. I could have continued but is not what Barca would have deserved."

Guardiola's friend, the Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, said he was surprised by the Barça coach's decision: "It comes as a surprise to me because first of all when you make a decision after a big disappointment like he has had in the past week, it may not be the right moment to make this decision. The philosophy of Barcelona has to be bigger than winning or losing a championship. Guardiola is one of the representatives of this philosophy and made this philosophy triumph so I would have loved him, even going through a disappointing year, to stay and come back and insist with his philosophy. That would be interesting."

On the pressure Guardiola faced, Wenger was sympathetic. "Believe me, if somebody can understand that it's me," he said. "I can understand there are not many managers who work throughout a career without a breather. Maybe he has not shown the stress. Maybe it's taken more than he has shown. You never know from the outside how deeply a man suffers from the inside. I have heard he has come out and wants to have a break to reflect on the situation, which you can understand after a certain time. I decided the other way to never come out of a job, because it becomes second nature to cope with it. It becomes your life. Some people need to move out at some stage."

Kaduna Bomber Chained In Hospital

The man suspected of carrying out today’s deadly bomb attacks that targeted the editorial offices of Thisday and Daily Sun in Kaduna has been chained and is under heavy security surveillance in a hospital.

In a related development, a security source said several eyewitnesses had detailed how the attacks took place. He said the bomber reportedly came in an ash-colored Honda Academy car that carried eleven gas cylinders that contained Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Five of the IEDs were in the trunk of the car, with six in the front and back seats.

The source said the bomber forced his way into the SOJ Plaza that houses Thisday, The Moment, and Daily Sun, but the bombs did not explode. When the occupants of the plaza heard some commotion, they rushed out and saw the bomber. Other onlookers soon joined and began to beat the suspect. In turn, the man began to recite what seemed like prayers and then confessed that he was carrying bombs. Ordered by the mob to evacuate the bombs, the bomber picked up one of the cylinders and threw it hard on the ground, causing a huge explosion that immediately killed three persons. As the man tried to flee, a mob gave chase, caught him, and was about to set him on fire when a team of police and soldiers rescued him.

“There was a big battle between the mob and security agencies,” said the source, adding that the security agents fired several gun shots in the air before they could whisk the suspect away from the angry crowd.  

Contrary to the speculations in widespread text messages in Kaduna that the captured bomber is of Igbo extraction, the Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Jinjiri Abubakar, has stated that the suspect is a Northerner from Borno State. The police disclosure about the identity of the bombing suspect tallies with an announcement by Nigeria’s secret service agency in Abuja.

Uh-oh these faces aren't happy faces

We're finding it hard to do our shocked face at the news that premiership footballer Jermaine Defoe has been accused of doing the dirty behind Alex Burke's back.
Just days after Alex and Jermaine went all cuddly in public  nursing assistant and part-time model Laura Brown, 23, from Newcastle claims to have had sex with the Spurs striker (look at us with our football lingo).
She says she went back to his hotel, having met him twice previously and become friends with him on Facebook.
"I'm not going to lie - we had sex," says Laura.

We love it when people start a sentence saying "I'm not going to lie" - something bad always follows.
She went on to add: "I never planned on sleeping with him, it just happened.
"You can see girls in Newcastle clubs week after week with different footballers and I think, ‘You are so stupid’. Now I’m the stupid one."
Wow, that's a shocking amount of self-awareness from a kiss-and-tell-girl. We're impressed.
But Alex has yet to respond to the claims.
Instead, going on Twitter and expressing her love for wine.
Which to be fair, is how we deal with problems in our relationship as well.
Alexandra tweeted: 'Wine helps!' and 'Wine who?' probably the latter when she'd got a bit tipsy and forget to make sense.
And if you're wondering whether Alex will dump Jermaine or forgive him, maybe the title of her new single Let It Go is a clue?
Let's have a look at the video and see, shall we? It's hilarious because Alex organises a little flashmob party on the tube.
We doubt Alex even gets the tube in real-life. She's not Rihanna.

So that probably means she'll take him back eventually. But, if the claims are true, Alex can't be all that surprised.
Apart from the whole premiership footballer thing (who as a group don't really do monogamy) Jermaine's not exactly got the best relationship history.
He dated BB's Chantelle Houghton in 2009 and she said this about him:
"He's a nasty person - cheats on everyone. He told me it was because I was too nice."
That's just lovely isn't it.
We're guessing Alex won't be wearing that Defoe football shirt for a while.

From fighting for life to world champion: Cyclist Laura Trott's amazing journey to the Olympics

Miraculously, Laura Trott won her battle for life as a newborn baby. Even more incredibly, she is now tipped for two gold medals at the Olympics

THERE was no easy way for doctors to break the news to proud parents Glenda and Adrian Trott – their newborn daughter was ­seriously ill and she was unlikely to survive.

Tiny Laura, who was born a month ­prematurely by caesarean section, had suffered a collapsed lung and was struggling to breathe.
For more than six weeks they kept a vigil in the special baby care unit as she battled for her life.
Miraculously, Laura pulled through. Even more incredibly, she is tipped for two gold medals at the Olympics.
Laura, 20, who is barely 5ft and weighs eight stone, is a double world cycling champion in the team pursuit and the omnium, a six-discipline event which is similar to the decathlon.
Laura says: “It’s hard to believe I’ve gone from fighting for my life to being a world champion and competing in the Games.
“It was really hard for my mum and dad in those first few weeks. The doctors told them that they didn’t think I was going to live.
"It was really touch and go. It must have been awful for my mum because as she’d had a caesarean she wasn’t allowed to see me until she was better too.”

Doctors urged Laura’s parents to get her involved in sport to strengthen the lung which caused her so many problems.

She took up trampolining and by 11 was just below the level to reach the British national side. But she had to give the sport up as she kept fainting while practising complex moves in training.
Laura says: “They did tests and couldn’t find anything wrong but it meant I had to stop trampolining.”
It is thanks to her mum and an embarrassing holiday in the United States that Laura became hooked on cycling.
She says: “It was 12 years ago and we were having a family holiday visiting the theme parks.
"Mum was a size 24 and struggling to get on some of the rides. And she was really upset when she was told that she could not go on a cable car as she weighed too much.
“After our holiday we went back home and she swore she was going to lose weight so she wouldn’t have to go through that again.
"We went swimming and someone there told my mum she should take a look at the cycling track at Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire which wasn’t far from where we lived.
“My mum, sister and I went down on a Friday night to watch the racing and gave it a go the following Monday.
“That was that. We all really loved it. We were hooked and the weight soon started falling off mum. She lost eight-and-a-half stone in 18 months just from cycling and has kept it off ever since. She’s a size 10 now.

“We joke about it now, but if mum wasn’t so overweight I wouldn’t have got into cycling. So cycling has really benefited the whole family.”

Laura readily admits that cycling has been her life from the age of 12. She says: “I became obsessed. I’ve had to make lots of sacrifices. I never got to play out in the street with my friends as I was always training, so it was tough when I was younger.
“Then when I reached my late-teens all my friends were out partying and getting drunk and obviously I couldn’t do that.
“But to be honest I wasn’t that bothered. I don’t even like getting drunk. I just think it’s a bit pointless. The thing that bothered me was not being able to go out with my friends. But it’s not that my life is so strict I can never have a good time. I just don’t enjoy going out and spending a lot of money getting hammered.
“I don’t see the point in wasting money on nothing. You don’t get anything out of it. You just ruin your health.”
Laura prefers to spend her time with boyfriend Sam Harrison, who is in GB’s senior cycling team, playing FIFA 12 on their Xbox.
“Because he’s a cyclist too, we do similar things together,” says Laura, whose family live within sight of the Olympic Park in Stratford, East London.
“We go to the cinema and we both just like lazy evenings on the sofa as well.

"He’s in the same world as me, so it means I’m not pressurised to go out. I know it’s pretty sad but we’ve got an Xbox that we’re always playing.

“I really like FIFA. I know it’s not a girl’s game but I enjoy it. I’m Tottenham. I’m a huge Spurs fan. I’m still gutted after they were beaten by Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final.”
With the Olympics less than 100 days away, Laura had to put celebrations for her 20th birthday this week on hold.
She says: “Because of the timing I didn’t have a big party. I was travelling because I had a stage race in the Czech Republic. It was a quiet birthday but it’s OK because it was only my 20th.
“Fortunately my 21st is next year. The timing couldn’t be any better – it’s not an Olympic year so I’ll make up for it then!”
Laura’s also has to cope with a stomach condition which means that she is sick after nearly every race.
She says: “I’ve got a high acid lining in my stomach. So when I try hard or tense my stomach muscles it causes problems.
“It doesn’t even bother me any more. At least it shows that I’m trying.”
If Laura lives up to predictions and is one of the stars of Team GB, she is likely to step out of the shadows. And she is also looking forward to getting a bit more attention.
She says: “I’ve not been recognised by anyone walking around on the streets yet. I suppose it would be very weird if it did happen, but it would also be quite cool.

I went to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010, but a lot of the big names didn’t go then because of the health issues surrounding the event.

“This time everyone will be there and I can’t wait. I’m really looking forward to it. I reckon I’ll be one of those people that will just walk round the Village open-mouthed looking at all the celebrities. I’ll be like a little kid.
“If I could meet just one person it would definitely be sprinter Usain Bolt. I just think he’s awesome. It would be amazing to meet him.”
Laura is immensely proud to have helped spark a resurgence of cycling in the UK in recent years.
The success of the teenager and her fellow Team Sky British cyclists has led to millions of people getting back on two wheels.
She says: “Everywhere I go there are people cycling. It makes me so proud, cycling is definitely the best form of transport.”
