SUNDAY, April 15, started like any other ONE in the life of Madam Sabi Ogunmola, a 65-year- old indigene of Ijio-Meso in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State. However, it did not end like those in the past as she was hacked to death by her grandson over suspicion that she was responsible for his impotence.
According to information gathered by Daily Tribune, Madam Ogunmola shared her Akube’s Compound home with her grandson, Bolaji Oshin, who joined her in September 2011. At lunch time on that day, she got yam flour popularly called Amala for her grandson and herself. After the meal, Madam Ogunmola went to spread a mat under a shady tree outside her home while 28-year-old Bolaji slept on a chair inside the house.
Suddenly, Bolaji stood up, armed himself with a wooden part of a hoe, approached his maternal grandmother where she laid and started clubbing her until she died, with her blood spattered all over the ground.
Shocking as this account might be, that was the scene that played out to the residents of the area who thereafter descended on Bolaji and beat him mercilessly before taking him to Iwere-Ile Division. After preliminary investigation, Daily Tribune gathered that the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku for further investigations.
However, having calmed down after his action, Bolaji said that he had reasons for his action and was both glad and sad. And his reasons were both weird and thought-provoking.
Giving a background information about himself to a police source who spoke under anonymity, Bolaji was quoted to have said: “I grew up in Lagos and attended primary school there. I stopped at Primary Four, after which I left for Niger Republic to learn panel beating. My father is in Lagos while my mother is somewhere in Ibadan as I was told by family members who saw her. She has mental disorder and has been wandering about. I am her only child but my father has remarried.
“I left Niger Republic about three years ago and went back to Ijio-Meso when I was directed home by God to go and start charcoal sale business. I first lived in my father’s house but God directed my heart to my mother’s family in September 2011 and I started living with my grandmother.
“What opened up this problem was that there was a girl I was interested in but my grandmother told me that I could not marry her because I could not have sex. She said it could only happen if she died. This happened about three days before I killed her. I started ruminating on what she said. On that Sunday, Mama went to buy Amala and gave me a wrap though that could not satisfy me. After eating it, a spirit just came upon me and I picked up a stick, went to where she laid on the mat and started hitting her with it. When I first hit her, she shouted Yeh! Yeh!!, and died after.
“Immediately she died, I became calm. I could not even understand myself at the beginning but the confusion later gave way and I was pained by what happened because my grandmother had been the one feeding me since September that I had been with her. On the other hand, I felt happy with myself because I am now healed of impotence. Unlike before, I now get excited at the sight of females and desires to have sex”.
However, Bolaji pleaded for mercy “because I am the only child of my mother and I don’t want her lineage to go into extinct”.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Ms Olabisi Okuwobi confirmed the arrest of the suspect, saying that his case was charged to court on Wednesday, April 25.
