Imo state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has described Rochas Foundation College as the best secondary school in Nigeria due to its outstanding academic records.
Receiving the trophy and cash prize won by the school during the just concluded National High Schools Quiz Competition, Governor Okorocha who is the founder, described the college as a center of excellence, adding that his penchant for free education was derived from the success of the college.
He said “my children have indeed proven that beyond reasonable doubt that Rochas Foundation College is a center of excellence. The policy of free education in Imo state is derived from the successes and academic record of Rochas Foundation College. I am optimistic that they will sustain this wonderful record”
The governor, however, promised the organizers of the programme that Imo state government will host next year’s edition of the competition.
He also splashed a cash gift of N100,000 to each of the three students that represented the school and N250,000 to the school management.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and the National Quiz Master, Dr Chidi Enwerem, said Rochas Foundation College emerged second best to the host school, Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja in a keenly contested intellectual Olympic, thus winning the trophy and N100,000 cash prize.
He described National High Schools Quiz Competition as a private public partnership [PPP] initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education, Inquest Limited, West African Examination Council {WAEC], National Examination Council [NECO] as well as social conscious corporate organizations.
He added that the aim of the program is to promote the spirit of healthy competition among secondary schools in the country, reward excellence in teaching and learning as well as promote national integration.
Dr Enwerem further applauded governor Okorocha’s philanthropic gesture behind the establishment of Rochas Foundation College which offers free education to the less privileged students as well as those from poor families.
