Franca Ogbu, an economics student of Federal University Of Technology, Yola, now Moddibo Adama University of Technology, life has turned awry quite early in life. The 22-year-old once delectable nubile wench has been turned into a monster by a spurned suitor who would rather waste a dish that is not available for him to devour. Ogbu had been propositioned by a fellow student, Chibuzor, for a relationship which she had rebuffed. Chibuzor, unable to live down the rejection then approached an outsider, called Nelson to help avenge Ogbu’s action which he considered an insult.
AS Ogbu’s Unique Selling Point (USP) was her beauty, both Chibuzor and Nelson, driven by cruel jealousy and criminal intent reasoned that if she was bathed with acid, her beauty would be messed up and she would become unattractive to men. One fateful morning, at about 1:15 a.m. when Franca was studying for her exams, someone called her name and in raising her head, she was bathed with concentrated acid. According to Dr Usman Abubakar, the zonal coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bauchi Zone, Ogbu “sustained serious injuries as her eyelids, scalp, breasts, nose, ears, hands and other parts of her body were partly burnt by the acid.”
THE severity of Ogbu’s injuries was so intense that she had to be transferred to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital where she had undergone a series of surgery. Despite her surgery Ogbu will still need N10m to restore her to some semblance of normal life. Although Chibuzor had since been expelled from school, that cannot be considered enough punishment for the crime he had committed as an accomplice or the sponsor of the dastardly act.
